Campus facilities and services

 

Study environment

Monash prides itself on the ability to provide personalised teaching to its students. The largest lecture theatre seats almost 200 students in comfort, and small tutorial groups ensure personalised teaching. All lecture theatres and tutorial rooms are equipped with high-quality technology to enable multimedia teaching.

  • Impressive state-of-the-art teaching facilities include high-tech lecture theatres and tutorial rooms
  • The library provides access to the fully-digitised Monash periodical and serials collection
  • Computer labs have cutting-edge PCs

Safety and security

  • There is 24-hour security on campus with regular security patrols.
  • Students living on campus have swipe-card entry to their accommodation and the residences are fully-managed.

Sports facilities

Sports facilities on campus include a fully-equipped gymnasium, two basketball/netball courts and a playing field large enough to accommodate soccer, rugby and hockey and two volleyball courts.

  • A permanent sports officer focuses on the continued development of sports and sports facilities on the campus
  • Monash students currently participate competitively in soccer, basketball, tennis, table tennis, netball, action cricket, rugby, touch rugby, volleyball and chess and indoor soccer
  • Monash sports teams tour neighbouring countries
  • Students are encouraged to establish new clubs such as pool and ballroom dancing, and aerobics classes are held in the residence
  • Arrangements have been negotiated for Monash students to utilise other sporting facilities such as the tennis courts at a private school next to the campus and golf and tennis facilities at the nearby Roodepoort country club
  • The campus is less than a kilometre from the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium and there are also private gymnasiums and equestrian, scuba diving, martial arts and sporting clubs in the area

Food and shopping

  • The campus has a popular bistro selling snacks and with meals that range from R20 - R30
  • Featherbrook shopping complex is less than one km of the campus, with cafes, restaurants, banking facilities and a supermarket
  • The Retail Crossing shopping complex which features several large retail chains, a gym, a supermarket and restaurants is five kms from the campus.
  • The upmarket Clearwater Mall, about six kilometres from the campus, houses major department stores, boutiques, speciality shops, cinemas and restaurants
  • Northgate Mall is about 10 kms from the campus

Transport

  • There is ample on-site car parking
  • A Monash shuttle bus service is available to take residence students to the Clearwater and Northgate Malls and to specified off-campus accommodation venues
  • Most students walk to the nearby shops or share a taxi to one of five major shopping malls and extensive sporting/leisure facilities in the area

Student Association

  • The Monash Student Association provides students with a platform for student representation
  • The association is also focused on developing social activities on the campus and facilitating the introduction and management of clubs and societies

Student Development and support services

A range of student development and support services are provided to help ease the transition to university life and to enable and empower students to achieve their best potential. These services focus on both academic and social student orientation and interaction.

  • Student Development Services offers professional counselling, support and advice to students on emotional, psychological, health, spiritual, educational, family and physical concerns in order to enhance the academic performance and wellbeing of the Monash South Africa community
  • Student development also offers a comprehensive campus health service, which includes primary health care and HIV/Aids services
  • The Student Development services offered on campus are free of charge to all students

Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching Services. Student Support (CALT.SS)

  • This service is available to all Monash students to ensure success in their academic studies
  • CALT.SS concentrates on the development of academic literacy and study skills through joint faculty tutorials, generic workshops, individual consultations, online tutorials and drop-in sessions

Quality of student life is a priority at Monash South Africa. Our on-campus student accommodation combines modern architectural design with a safe and secure living environment. Space is limited and is available to enrolled students only. Early applications will be given preference.
Our accommodation provides a high-quality living experience including:

  • self-catering accommodation with private single or shared bedrooms;
  • kitchen facilities;
  • television and games rooms, small lounges and outdoor braai areas;
  • internet access points in each bedroom, providing students with 24-hour online computing, library and specialist Monash services (computers are not supplied);
  • laundry facilities;
  • 24-hour security and access control;
  • on-site parking.

Accommodation fees

  • 2009 fees range from R23,090 to R35,000 per year
  • Fees are payable on a semester basis and are due prior to semester commencement. A security deposit is applicable

Off-campus accommodation

  • A variety of quality off-campus student accommodation to suit different requirements and budgets is available within a 10 kilometre radius of the campus
  • A Monash shuttle bus provides transport to and from the campus on a specified route

The service aims to inform and educate students about their housing options and tenancy rights and responsibilities specifically related to off-campus housing. This online resource includes links to the Rental Housing Act, Consumer Affairs South Africa and access to the off-campus housing database.

  • While students are free to arrange their own private accommodation, Monash South Africa has arrangements with carefully-selected private providers to facilitate the procurement of off-campus accommodation
  • Monash Student Development representatives are available on campus at selected times to facilitate managing the relationship between students and landlords
