Students in Free Enterprise at Monash South Africa

A new student initiative has been established on the Monash South Africa campus called ‘Students in Free Enterprise’ (SIFE). In preparing university students to make a meaningful contribution toward a better world as entrepreneurs and business leaders, SIFE challenges them to address real-world business and economic issues in their communities

SIFE is a global, non-profit organisation which operates in partnership with higher education institutions and is active at more than 1500 universities in over 45 countries.

At the Monash South Africa campus the organisation was established by an initial group of six members in February 2009. This group organised a marketing and recruiting drive and, after a selective interview process, it now comprises a sustainable team of 69 active members.

Project Asenze
The Poultry-Woodwork-Garden (3-in-1) project. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with Mr. Leslie Gama. There is also an understanding that all the 30 beneficiaries of this 3-in-1 project will participate in various training sessions which will take place beginning in June 2010. These training sessions will focus on key SIFE criteria such as financial literacy training provided via our partnership with Operation Hope. The basics of checking credit, savings, investment, the history of banking, dignity and entrepreneurship are modules they will undertake to equip them to make the most of the economic opportunity that will be created via this project.

Community Engagement Partnership Project
A partnership with community leaders at the Zandspruit Community Center – Emthonjeni is currently been developed to provide complementary training of identified entrepreneurs. This will be accomplished by incorporating SIFE criteria into the ”Give Yourself A Job - Your Journey To Success” training manual. It is also intended that the beneficiaries of this project will also benefit from the various training activities that will take place at Monash campus via SIFE MSA partnerships e.g. financial literacy training provided by Operation Hope.

Zandspruit Entrepreneurship Hub [Business Park Project]
SIFE MSA will be partnering with other community engagement organisations and facilitate the incorporation of principles of free enterprise to facilitate the “creation of sustainable economic opportunities” for their beneficiaries. These include Significant Impact Agency and the newly formed Lion’s club.
