HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Nearly two-thirds of all people living with HIV are found in Sub-Saharan Africa, although this region contains little more than 10% of the world’s population.

HIV/AIDS has caused immense human suffering in the continent. During 2006 alone, an estimated 2.1 million adults and children died as result of AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 15 million Africans have died from AIDS.

On 21 May 2008, an HIV/AIDS Awareness Day was held on the Monash South Africa campus. The event was hosted by the Monash Student Development Department in association with Lifeline, SANTA and the AIDS Consortium.

The aim of the event was to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and related diseases. During the day more than700 information packages were handed out to staff and students.

Monash Student Development intends to make the 2009 HIV/AIDS Awareness Day an even bigger, better and more exciting event.
