Monash Africa Centre Public Lecture

Topic: Democracy in South Africa – Where are we headed?
The future of South Africa’s democracy is seemingly under siege amid reported threats to media freedom, calls for increased state intervention in the economy and threats to the Public Protector’s office. An informed view of our democracy will be presented and the relationship between democracy and effective governance will be analysed with a view into the future.

Presenter: Prof Steven Friedman
Well-known and respected newspaper columnist, author and political commentator, Prof Friedman is the Director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy at Rhodes University and the University of Johannesburg.
