The Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) is offered by the School of Health Sciences at Monash South Africa. Psychology units and the Psychology major are also a popular choice for students registered for a Bachelor of Social Science
Psychology is the study of human behaviour, which includes all that we perceive, understand, feel, think and do as individuals interacting with the greater world. It includes the study of the biological basis of behaviour, the development of the person from conception to death, the individual and society, perception and thinking, personality and abnormal behaviour.
The programme also includes a comprehensive study of research design, statistics and analysis, as well as the practical and ethical applications of research. Students study the core areas of the scientific discipline of psychology, as well as being able to pursue their individual interests in a range of areas relating to the application of psychology. Students are also introduced to other disciplines which complement the study of psychology.
Objectives
As well as developing the intellectual capabilities inherent in the interpretation of sources of knowledge and the capacity for quantitative and qualitative analysis, critique and creative thinking in various humanities, social science disciplines, this course gives students opportunities to develop an understanding of psychology as a scientific discipline and to appreciate the role it plays within society as a whole.
Length
Three years full time or equivalent
Structure
This course consists of a compulsory psychology major and an art major, with additional social science studies chosen from a variety of social science disciplines.
Requirements
Students complete the following:
(a.) a psychology major (60 points)
(b.) a social science minor (24 points)
(c.) a first-year-level social science sequences (12 points)
(d.) an additional 48 points of social science elective units/ second major
No more than 10 units (60 points) are to be completed at a first-year level. Students must complete a minimum of 36 points at third-year level (across the duration of the degree).
Majors
A major requires the completion of a minimum of 8 units. Students wishing to undertake the APS accredited major sequence in Psychology must complete a total of 10 units (nine core units, including the two first-year core units, and one elective unit). Normally a major will include a first-year level sequence (or two core units), two units at second-level and four units at third-level, or three units at second-level and three units at third level. A major is normally taken over three years.
Electives
Electives provide students the opportunity to select complementary studies and/or pursue academic interests from across the School of Health Sciences and other Schools on the Monash South Africa campus.
Elective choices can be from a wide variety of disciplines such as psychology, management, marketing, journalism, languages, information technology and/or other units available at Monash South Africa.
Electives must be taken at first, second and third year levels as appropriate to the course year.
Students from other Schools
Units offered by the School of Health Sciences can also be taken by a broad range of students from other Monash South Africa Schools.
