Monash South Africa Foundation Programme (MSAFP)
Student Awards Function for Semester 1 2011: “Celebrating Student Achievement”
Master of Ceremonies, Laurence Shee, started proceedings with Tom Peters’ challenge to remain innovative in the search for what works best in teaching and learning:
I imagine a school system that recognizes learning is natural, that a love of learning is normal, and that real learning is passionate learning. A school curriculum that values questions above answers…creativity above fact regurgitation…individuality above conformity and excellence above standardized performance. And we must reject all notions of 'reform' that serve up more of the same: more testing, more 'standards', more uniformity, more conformity, more bureaucracy. From: Re-imagine by Tom Peters.
Against a backdrop of a slide show of MSAFP activities, Nicolene Murdoch, Executive Director: Teaching, Learning and Quality, gave a short address to parents, students and staff. In essence, her message was for students not to fall into the trap of negative “labels”. The MSAFP should not be seen as a soft pathway, but rather as an opportunity for students to enter an undergraduate programme armed with the skills, not just to cope with, but also to excel in future studies – as many foundation programme students have done and continue to do.
Then it was the turn of Debbie Lees, Head of Monash South Africa’s Foundation Programme, to welcome guests, congratulate award winners and thank her staff for their part in another successful semester.
