Monash CHEQ visit to South Africa

In support of Monash University’s commitment to embracing improved methods of operating and meeting rigorous quality standards, service level agreements (SLAs) were introduced for support services. These agreements assist in the move towards self-sustaining, transparent business management where the quality of support services can be easily demonstrated.

Mr David Pawley, Quality Adviser responsible for Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in the Centre for Higher Education Quality and Dr Sid Nair, Quality Advisor: Evaluations, presented a workshop on SLAs at the Monash South Africa campus in June.
During the workshop they looked at the purpose, elements and benefits of SLAs and discussed SLAs in the South African context as well as the first steps in developing service catalogues and service statements. The workshop was attended by about 40 delegates from South African tertiary institutions.
While at MSA, Mr Pawley and Dr Nair also facilitated other sessions including one for academic staff on utilising staff evaluation tools for promotional purposes, and one for general staff on surveys designed to assist work areas develop skills and needs required by their staff.

Their trip to South Africa coincided with a conference on 20 June hosted by the Foundation of Tertiary Institutions of the Northern Metropolis (FOTIM) – the largest academic consortium in South Africa.

At the FOTIM conference Ms Nicolene Murdoch, Director of Institutional Planning and Quality Assurance at MSA presented a paper: “Preparing for the audit: It’s a long journey, but enjoy the ride”, and Mr Pawley and Dr Nair presented a paper entitled: “Quality and Feedback: the duty of care”.
