Biggest ever O-week at Monash South Africa
7 March 2006
It was the biggest ever Orientation Week held at Monash South Africa, from 20 to 24 February 2006, with over 400 new students participating in activities aimed at introducing them to the different facets of university life.
During the week, new students were welcomed to the campus by the Pro Vice-Chancellor
and the heads of schools and were introduced to various services available
to them such as Student Services Centre, the Student Development Centre,
Language and Learning services and the Monash library facilities. They also
attended presentations on the history of Monash, health and safety, research
and plagiarism.
The new students also found out about the Student Association and the
sports and clubs available on campus.
During individual sessions in the computer labs, Information Technolgy
Services staff gave students their Authcate and Novell passwords and showed
them how to access all their IT resources including email, network drives
and the student portal.
Throughout the week there were also a variety of fun activities happening
on campus such as wall climbing, riding the bucking bronco, archery competitions
and foosball games.
Students also had the option of attending a fun-filled one-day excursion
to the theme park at Gold Reef City in the south of the Johannesburg where
they got to go on the rides and go down a gold mine shaft where they saw
molten gold being poured. They were also treated to displays of gumboot
and Zulu dancing.
Orientation week concluded with the Student Association party held on
the MSA campus on the Friday night.
