Earlier this month, the director advancement at Monash South Africa,
Mr Andre Lubbe, met with the Burundi Minister of Education the Honourable
Dr Ir Saidi Kibeya, to discuss future cooperation between Monash South
Africa and the government of Burundi. This was the first time that a Monash
representative had visited Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi.
During the meeting, Dr Kibeya thanked Monash South Africa for taking the
initiative to establish a formal agreement with the government of Burundi
and he expressed the eagerness of the Department of Education to send
government-sponsored students to study at Monash South Africa.
Dr Kibeya emphasised that the national priorities of Burundi lie within
the fields of information technology, medicine and engineering and that
they would be looking towards an agreement with Monash that would enhance
their capacity in these areas.
Mr Lubbe, who was on a Monash South Africa road show visiting the secondary
schools in Bujumbura, also met with the South African Consul in order
to pave the way for Burundian students to study at Monash South Africa.
