A few minutes away from the World Heritage Site, the Cradle of Humankind, the First African Post Graduate Course “Victimology, Victim Assistance and Criminal Justice” will be held at Monash South Africa from 24 November to 6 December 2008.
This course is being organised and presented by Dr Robert Peacock and Dr Jaco Barkhuizen. It will be attended by students from all over the world, but from Africa in particular.
A number of internationally-renowned experts in the field of Victimology, Criminology and Criminal Justice will cover areas such as: crisis intervention; crisis management; victim assistance; victim compensation; restorative justice; abuse of power; victimisation; vulnerability of specific groups and individuals; theoretical concepts of victimology; latest developments in victim assistance; structural and institutional victimisation; international victim surveys; victim impact statements, etc.
The course will be presented in English and will be on par with the annual Eastern European, Asian and Latin American postgraduate Victimology and Criminal Justice courses.
The course will be presented in association with the World Society of Victimology (WSV). The WSV is a non-profit organisation with Special Category consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations and the Council of Europe and encourages interdisciplinary and comparative victimological work and research to advance cooperation between international, national, regional and local agencies.
The Criminology and Criminal Justice Department at Monash South Africa serves on the Regional Development Commission of the WSV, a panel of regional and cultural membership ambassadors who advises on and promotes recruitment within their own sectors.
Dr Robert Peacock is also a member of the International Scientific Committee of the World Society of Victimology for purposes of the selection of presenters for participation in the 13th International Symposium on Victimology. Theme: “Victimology and Human Security” August 23 - 28, 2009 Hosted by Tokiwa University on Tokiwa University Campus in Mito, Ibaraki, Japan. Dr Jaco Barkhuizen is the first person in the world who obtained a doctoral degree in the specialisation field of Victimology. He also serves as a chairperson on a panel of the International Victimology symposium of the WSV in Japan.
