Although the Monash South Africa campus in Ruimsig has been open since 2001, Monash University in Australia celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. Great fun was had by all when Monash South Africa celebrated this 50th Anniversary with a Cultural Day Celebration and Potjiekos Competition on the afternoon of 3 October 2008.
The celebration took place on the sports field and staff, their families and students participated in 24 teams and produced either a ‘potjie’ or a cultural dish. Judges of the Potjiekos Competition consisted of MSA Board members and Board members from Australia.
There were prizes for the Potjiekos Competition and a lucky draw for participants in the Cultural Dish category.  Music provided by a DJ added to the festive feel of the occasion as did performances by cultural groups and societies.
MSA Director of Advancement said that: “Besides celebrating the 50th Anniversary this occasion also created an opportunity for staff and students to celebrate the diversity of cultures on this campus and to and socialise with those they hadn’t seen for some time, to get to know each other better and more importantly, to have fun!”

At 50 years old Monash University is relatively young in university terms, but has achieved much in this space of time. It is the biggest university in Australia with over 52 000 students, it is a member of the prestigious ‘Group of Eight” top Australian universities in terms of research and teaching and is the only university of this age to be rated in the top 50 in the world by the prestigious Times Higher Education University Ranking s Supplement (2007).
