Monash South Africa hosted the first of many events planned for the South African Monash Alumni Association last week. Held at the A-maiz-ing-Maize in Honeydew near the campus, the event was intended for new alumni members as introduction to the association and its newly formed steering committee, and to raise funds and collect clothes and blankets for the Video Centre Kids charity.

The Video Centre Kids houses and feeds a number of homeless adults and children in the Muldersdrift area near to the Monash campus and is dedicated to ensuring that those in need are kept warm and fed throughout the cold winter months.

“We understand that the winter months can be particularly gruelling for those who do not have the means to care for themselves,” said Cristelle Snyman from the Monash Alumni Relations Office, “which is why we felt it important to create awareness among our alumni members of the good work undertaken by Video Centre Kids by collecting and donating clothes, blankets and funds”.

Roselle Sherriff, a Monash Alumni said: “My time at Monash was fantastic, so getting together and having fun with some old friends while collectively doing something for a good cause made the whole day worthwhile.”

There are currently over 225 000 Monash University Alumni in 120 countries across the globe. Chapters are run by Alumni volunteers in cities including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea and London. This year new Alumni groups were created in South Africa and Botswana. These groups work with Monash to provide support and networking opportunities, as well as professional and personal development for Monash University graduates.

“We encourage Monash South Africa graduates to remain in close contact with the university and offer support and guidance to current students, as well as assistance to recently graduated students entering the work force. We are really pleased with the enthusiasm and support shown by our graduates to the formation of the South African chapter of the Monash Alumni Association, and look forward to hosting some exciting events in the future,” says Snyman.
