Staff from Monash South Africa have taken out this year's Global Corporate 10,000 steps challenge - a corporate health and wellbeing initiative developed specifically for the workplace.

The team, called The Step Warriors, has beaten more than 8500 teams from 75 countries by walking about 22 kilometres or more than 34,000 steps in total each day.

Over the course of the competition they walked 15,975 kilometres. They finished the challenge 21 days early.

Team manager and director of operations at MSA Peter Goddard said he was proud of the team’s efforts.

"We won the South African 10,000 steps challenge last year, and came second out of 7000 teams in the 2008 global challenge so it is fantastic to win the competition this year," Mr Goddard said.

"However, it’s not about coming first, second or third but about developing a healthy habit to stay active every day.

"We gained a lot from the last 106 days and hope to continue to remain active every day throughout the year."

The challenge started six years ago to address the emerging health crisis resulting from longer workdays, sedentary occupations and little or no exercise.
