On Saturday 6 November 2010, the Monash Botswana alumni steering committee initiated a community outreach campaign benefitting the children and staff of Gabane Home Based Care  - a pre-school for orphans and disadvantaged children in Gaborone.

This community engagement initiative involved land clean-up activities, and the donation of a dustbin and waste plastic bags, so staff kan keep the area tidy in future. The Alumni group cleared the area surrounding the school, and made a pathway for the children to gain easier access water in the restrooms. Monash graduate Jacob Thomas, a counsellor and psychologist, also offered his professional services to the home on a Pro Bono basis.

Ms Sebina Koti, coordinator for the home, when accepting the donations made by the Monash alumni, said she wished the group luck in the future, and encouraged them to carry on their good work since very few youth in the country are involved in these kind of activities.

Cristelle Snyman, from the Monash South Africa Alumni Relations Office, said: “We are extremely excited to see our alumni becoming involved in community projects after they return to their home countries, and we plan to support them in their involvement in similar projects in the future.”

The steering committee will continue to engage in community upliftment activities and events in their efforts to make a difference in Botswana.
