On 16 September 2010, Monash South Africa launched its Public Lecture Series with an inaugural lecture by Mr Monde Tabata entitled: “A New Pioneerism in Africa:  A case for the transformation of the African continent and the role of students, universities, entrepreneurs and social institutions”.

This was the first in a series of four lectures which will be held on the Monash campus during September, October and November this year.

In his welcoming address, Professor Tyrone Pretorius, Pro Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash South Africa, said that the launch signaled the beginning of a new interesting and exciting phase in the development of the campus, which is now in its ninth year of operation.

He added that: “This Public lecture series forms part of the building of the ethos of the university. Through this series we hope to establish an environment where vigorous debate is encouraged and where our students can be exposed to different views and opinions. We also look forward to it becoming an annual event into the future.”

At the second lecture in the series on 6 October 2010, Ann Harrap, Australian High Commissioner to South Africa, focused mainly on Australia’s commitment to foreign policy, its engagement with Africa and the bilateral relationship between Australia and South Africa.

She noted in her introduction that The Australian High Commission and Monash South Africa have a very strong association. They worked very well together during the FIFA Soccer World Cup to provide access to the Australian Socceroos football team, for staff and students, and for kids from local township schools that benefit from Monash South Africa’s volunteer activism.  They have also collaborated on major conferences and workshops, to raise awareness of the significant investment in Africa’s future development that this campus represents.
