A group of 45 accounting academic staff from seven universities around the country took part in the 2010 South African Accounting Association (SAAA) Regional Conference held at Monash South Africa on 23 September 2010.
Senior Accounting lecturer at Monash South Africa, Blanche Steyn, who is chairperson of the region and the event organiser, said that the conference was a huge success in terms of the quality of the papers and abstracts presented, as well as the excellent networking opportunities it provided.
The extensive and exciting programme included 17 presentations, of which 15 were presented simultaneously in three parallel sessions: Accounting and Management Accounting; Auditing and Governance; and Taxation.
The plenary session papers were presented by Prof Danie Coetsee and Grietjie Verhoef of the University of Johannesburg. Four of the presentations were based on papers that were accepted after a double-blind peer review process and the remaining presentations were based on reviewed and accepted abstract presentations.
The independently-judged Best Paper Award went to Anton du Toit, Head of the Accountancy Studies unit at Monash South Africa for his paper: “External auditing and the foundations of sustainability assurance”. The prize of R1000 was sponsored by LexisNexis.
The book prize for the Best Abstract Presentation sponsored by Oxford books went to Pieter van der Zwan from North-West University, for his abstract: “Addressing Africa’s resource curse: A critical analysis of royalties on Africa’s oil resources”.
Book sponsors of the conference Oxford University publishers, Knowledge Resources, LexisNexis and CQS Technology Holdings all provided interesting exhibitions at the conference.
