Bachelor of Social ScienceIn the contemporary educational climate, which is increasingly vocationally oriented, Monash South Africa, through the newly formed School of Social Science, is introducing a Bachelor of Social Science (BSocSci) to replace its current Bachelor of Arts (BA). This new offering will provide an opportunity for Monash South Africa graduates to differentiate themselves from others applying for positions with the more traditional BA degree. At Monash, we pride ourselves in ‘academic strengthening’, emphasising curriculum reform and renewal. The international student profile represented at Monash South Africa further necessitates internationalisation and contextualisation of the curriculum to enhance employability and entrepreneurial opportunities. The new Bachelor of Social Science will facilitate increased opportunities for curriculum renewal, which incorporates not only practical experiences, internships and work-based and service learning components, but also aligns graduate attributes more closely to prospective employers’ expectations. The new Bachelor of Social Science will be offered from 1 January 2012. Monash South Africa will continue to offer the Bachelor of Arts to all current students until completion as per their original enrolment. They will in no way be affected by the changeOverviewThe School of Social Science at Monash South Africa aims to educate future public leaders, professionals and managers, instilling in them knowledge of society’s institutions, cultures and values. Social Science students strive to understand, analyse, describe and explain the human world and their position within it, just as scientists attempt to describe and comprehend the natural world. The Bachelor of Social Science (BSocSci) degree is designed to help students make sense of our rapidly changing global culture. Equally relevant to the professional world of work and the world of knowledge, the BSocSci aims to provide students with the skills needed to contribute to the social and cultural fabric of the community and to become truly global citizens. The BSocSci introduces students to a range of areas of study in the humanities and social sciences. While each unit provides an introduction to the specific area of study, skills of analysis, communication and research will also be developed. Social Science studies require students to read, debate, examine and discuss issues, teaching them to carefully build arguments and propositions. Students will be encouraged to think independently and to develop new ways of approaching problems. See also:
