Condensed format of the course:

The aim of the course is to support the development of disaster risk reduction capacity at all levels in order to improve their ability to better understand and manage the variety of disasters the region faces today.

What will you learn?

Cluster 1: Introduction to disaster risk management (5 days)

This course introduces an integrated and co-ordinate disaster prevention and mitigation as the core principles to guide disaster risk management in South Africa. Disaster management policy and the framework that focuses on preventing or reducing the risk of disasters, mitigating the severity of disasters, emergency preparedness, rapid and effective response to disasters and post- disaster recovery. Apart from integrated and co-ordinated disaster management, further emphasis is placed on developmental measures.

Cluster 2: Disaster Project Management (5 days)

Project management is the wave of the future in disaster management. Project management provides people with a powerful set of tools that improves their ability to plan, implement, and manage activities to accomplish specific organizational objectives. This course provides insight into the unique nature of an integrative approach of project management, how to integrate it into disaster management phases of the continuum and integration within the process of managing actual disaster risk reduction projects.

Cluster 3: Disaster risk assessment and risk reduction planning (5 days)

South Africa faces many different types of risks on a daily basis, including health risks, environmental risks, financial risks and security risks. However, disaster risk specifically refers to the likelihood of harm or loss due to the action of natural or other hazards or other external threats on vulnerable structures, services, areas, communities and households.

Disaster risk assessment is the first step in planning an effective disaster risk reduction programme. This course will introduce the learner to different tools for risk assessment and also to tool for institutional development and organizational strengthening.

Cluster 4: Strategic Disaster Risk Management for Crowd Management (5 days)

The hosting of events, be they large international events or smaller niche interest events, has huge and long- lasting impacts on the local environment, economy and industry. The course provides an insight into the strategic management of crowd of all scales and nature.
