Future Academic Leaders

It is widely accepted that South Africa suffers from an acute shortage of well qualified and trained professionals.  This is true across the range of professions including academic and scholarly research and teaching careers.  In regard to tertiary education, there are a number of glaring anomalies.  These include the consistent trend that South African universities are not producing sufficient highly qualified black South African academics.

Monash South Africa has responded to this need, as have numerous other South African tertiary institutions. Monash South Africa has taken international best practice and designed the `Future Academic Leaders` programme.  With the generous support of the Ford Foundation, Monash South Africa offers scholarships to black South Africans wishing to pursue an academic research and teaching career in Humanities-related disciplines.  The programme operates under the auspices of the School of Arts and the Office of the DPVC Research.

On successful completion of a Monash University research MA or PhD the scholarship candidates will be required to successfully complete the two-year part-time Monash University (or approved South African equivalent) postgraduate diploma in tertiary education and will be offered full-time continuing academic lectureships in the School of Arts at Monash South Africa.

The programme has the following components:

  • Full Scholarship for postgraduate degree and diploma registration
  • Academic Tutor status and salary
  • Mentorship and Life Skills training
  • Monash South Africa and Monash University (Australia) Supervision
  • Research and Tutor Training
  • Residency period at Monash University (Australia) campus
  • Research and national and international conference funding
  • Co-authored publications

Scholarships are offered in the following broad discipline areas:

  • African/South African/International Studies
  • Communication and Media Studies
  • Criminology and Criminal Justice
  • Geographical and Environmental Sciences
  • Languages and Literatures
  • Philosophy and Ethics
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
