Safety in the office building
- Keep your purse, wallet, keys, cell phone and valuables with you at all times or locked in a drawer.
- When working after hours, let someone or the Security Office know that you will be working late and ask them to do regular checks.
- Mark personal items such as kettle, radio, etc. clearly with your name, initials and identification number and lock your office whenever you leave.
- Report any broken windows, flickering lights, dimly lit corridors or doors that do not lock properly immediate.
- Check the identity of loiterers or strangers who are at your officers or ask if you can be of assistance. If your enquiry seems to make them uncomfortable, immediately contact the Security Officers (011 950 4099) on duty or the Head: Campus Protection Services.
- Do not walk to your vehicle alone after hours. Contact the Security Office (011 950 4099) and ask for an Officer to escort you to your vehicle.
- Don’t park your vehicle in dark areas that is not well-lit.
- Always lock your vehicle and close the windows. Do not leave even a small space open as this could provide someone with the opportunity to spray gas through the opening.
- Always have your key in your hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the area around your vehicle to ensure that nobody is hiding next to it or behind it as well as in the front or in the back seats of the vehicle.
- Lock your vehicle as soon as you get in, even before you fasten your seat belt. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
- If you notice any strangers hanging around the parking area, immediately notify the Security Officer on duty or contact the South Africa Policy Service dialing 10111.
