Monash University took top honours in the annual Australian University Games (AUG) in the closest finish in the history of the games.
In successfully defending their “Overall Sporting Champions” title, the Monash team beat its rival, University of Melbourne, by just two points with a score of 1050 to 1048.
Last year, three Monash South Africa rugby players (Tanaka Bvuma, Matt Cronje and Sabastian Gilbert) and a their coach (Johan Smith) joined the Monash Sevens rugby side at the AUG. The South African players contributed to the University winning the bronze medal (Division II) by scoring 11 tries.
This year, athlete Orazio Cremona, a first year student from the Monash South Africa campus, contributed to the Monash team’s overall success. He competed in the Shot Put and Discuss events at the Gold Coast. Although beaten by a fellow Monash athlete, Orazio won the silver medal in both these events.
Considering that Monash won the games by 14 points in 2008 and just two points in 2009, Monash South Africa athletes can be proud of their contribution to this success of Monash University Sport in the past two years.
