Monash South Africa Rugby Sevens
October 2009
The Monash Sevens Rugby Squad has been followed a strict five-week training and conditioning programme during which time the players showed great commitment.
After taking part in grueling fitness and conditioning training between 13 and 20 August 2009, a group of the fittest and most skillful 20 players were selected for the team.
Players undertook fitness tests and were subjected to strength and conditioning coaching, with the latest agility and conditioning equipment such as agility and speed ladders, hurdles, resistor bands and bungee cords.
Strength training was included into the programme via a gym strength programme and the use of body weight and strength bags.
Player support included the provision of nutritional supplements and information on nutrition and hydration.
The team played in the Brits Rugby Club Sevens Tournament in Northwest Province on Saturday, 19 September 2009.
Other strong clubs at this tournament included: Brits RC; Harlequins RFC; Centurion; Terminators (KZN); Correctional Services RFC; Westelikes; Atteridgeville; Naka Bulle; Tshwane University of Technology; Tswaing and a Blue Bulls Sevens team.
The team ran out at number one in their pool and won all the pool matches and in the process earned 19 out of the possible 20 bonus points.
