Discovery Walk The Talk Fun Walk Community Fitness Event: Discovery 702 Walk

July 2011

Discovery Walk The Talk Fun Walk Community Fitness Event: Discovery 702 Walk

The Discovery Radio 702 Walk the Talk Fun Walk event took place on Sunday, 24 July 2011 at Marks Park at Emmerentia in Johannesburg.

Our institution registered 330 participants consisting of both students and staff. Four 65 seater buses left at 07:30 from Monash to Marks Park. Monash South Africa had four great picnic sites on the main hospitality area near the big stage which was made for musical and dance performances. The 15 kilometre and 30 kilometre walk participants started early but the majority of Monash walked in the 5 kilometre.

This race started at 11:00 and the Monash group was situated right at the starting point. As we walked by with our Monash South Africa banners (everyone dressed in our long sleeved Monash sweaters) the announcer again as usual (with reference to the past Walk the talk events we took part in) made special mention about Team MONASH. At around 13:30 the support crew started handing out the picnic food parcels and drinks. The whole Monash South Africa group had lunch together under the umbrellas at our site. During this time live music and entertainment were provided on stage nearby to our camping site. At 14:30 students and staff vacated the premises and at 15:00 the support group left the site after cleaning up the area.

It was a great day enjoyed by all and looking forward to the next walk in 2012.

Monash South Africa sports department would like to acknowledge  Prof. Pretorius, Mr. Andre Lubbe and Team Monash Australia for sponsoring the event. Also to Cristelle Snyman and the Monas South Africa support crew for all the hard work as well as to all students and staff members that participated in this event.
